The Expanding Access to Diabetes Self-Management Training Act
There are good things happening in diabetes right now! If you’ve seen me on facebook this week, you already know that there is legislation before Congress that, if approved, will expand Medicare coverage of Diabetes Self-Management Training. This is a bipartisan bill that is entitled the Expanding Access to Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) Act (S. 814). A similar bill is expected in the House very soon, and may already be introduced by the time you read this. Diabetes Self-Management Training not only helps people feel better & live healthier lives, it also saves the Medicare program an estimated $135 per patient per month. Very few investments have that kind of return! If you haven’t already, consider contacting your representatives to US Congress and encouraging them to vote for the Expanding Access to Diabetes Self-Management Training (DSMT) Act (S. 814).
Generic Humalog to Become Available
Manufacturer Eli Lilly recently announced that it will distribute a generic version of Humalog, which will be sold under the name Lispro. The insulin will be about half the price of Humalog. It will require a prescription and can be substituted for the name brand Humalog upon patient request. This is especially good news for Medicare recipients who are not eligible for cost-sharing programs offered by manufacturers. If the cost of your insulin is a factor in determining how you control your blood glucose from day to day, work with your healthcare team to find the least expensive alternative. No one should suffer long term consequences of diabetes because of the high cost of insulin.
It’s the best time of year, at least in my opinion. Flowers are blooming, everything is turning green, and my spirits are lifting with the temperature. I hope you & yours are doing well! If you’re struggling to manage your diabetes or another nutrition-related health condition and you could use some help finding your way back to health, don’t hesitate to call.
Wishing you all good things,
